What is the most popular Indian Dish?

Updated: Nov 8, 2021

Is it possible to narrow it down to just one?

It is not uncommon to find an Indian restaurant in every city across the world. One of the reasons for this is that Indian cuisine has a wide variety of dishes for people to choose from. As one of the oldest countries in the world, India has had ample time to develop its rich cuisine. This diversity makes it easy for people to try something new with every meal.

Since many people have a misconception about what Indian food is, we will discuss some popular dishes that are Indian and their origins.

Since India is a country with a lot of cultural diversity, it has a variety of different dishes. There isn't one specific Indian dish that is most popular in India or worldwide, but there are many foods from India that are very popular in different parts of the world.

Most Popular Dishes Worldwide

The dal tarka dish is one of the most popular Indian dishes you can find at many restaurants. The origins of this dish are hard to pinpoint but it’s believed that it was first made by a cook who couldn't afford meat and wanted a new side dish. Today, dal tarka is often served with rice or naan bread as an appetizer or main entree with vegetables on the side.

While Indian cuisine varies from region to region, the most popular dish in India is a vegetarian dish called Baingan ka Bharta. This dish is a mashed eggplant that is sautéed with spices and then tempered with tomatoes and onion. Baingan ka Bharta can be served as a side or it can be used as an ingredient for other dishes.

India is a country with a diverse culture and a rich history. This, in turn, makes it home to many different dishes. Some of the most popular dishes from India are:

  • Chaat- A street food originating from the northern region of India. It consists mainly of various spices mixed into a spiced water or yogurt base to form a chaat.

  • Tandoori Chicken- A spicy dish consisting of roasted chicken cooked in clay oven or tandoor and flavored with various Indian spices. The dish is usually consumed as an appetizer and can be served as part of main course as well.

  • Naan Bread - A leavened, oven-baked or tawa-fried flatbread

  • Aloo Gobi - A vegetarian dish made with potatoes, cauliflower, and Indian spices.

  • Butter Chicken - A curry of chicken in a spiced tomato, butter and cream sauce.

  • Chicken Tikka Masala - A dish consisting of roasted marinated chicken chunks in spiced curry sauce.

An Endless Debate

As there are endless varieties of Indian food available across the world, it is difficult to pin down just a single dish to accommodate so many unique tastes. Each area of the world has its own most popular Indian dish demonstrating the sheer popularity of Indian food worldwide.

To conclude, depending on which section of the world you go to, the answer to this question differs; meaning it is incredibly difficult to pick just one dish.
